Why pursue this program? How can literature and artistic expression deepen our comprehension of the world? What societal influences determine whose voices are amplified in literary and public conversations? What pressing issues confront modern society, and how can literary and philosophical studies contribute to solving them? Our BA in English Literature and Philosophy invites you to examine these questions and more, preparing you to analyze and articulate solutions to complex challenges. Cardiff's English Literature program has earned global recognition for its academic excellence. Our adaptable curriculum lets you explore diverse literary periods, cultures, and genres. Beyond traditional texts, we investigate intersections between literature and various disciplines including film, visual arts, history, technology, and linguistics. You'll discover how literature engages with social, environmental, and economic issues to foster inclusivity and develop sustainable solutions for our planet's future. In Philosophy, you'll establish foundational knowledge in language philosophy while exploring epistemology, philosophy of mind, and moral/political philosophy. Elective options include aesthetics, feminist philosophy, and phenomenology. The final year allows specialization in your chosen areas, deepening your understanding of philosophical concepts and their practical applications. A highlight of the program is a capstone Philosophy project where you'll apply research to address real-world ethical or social challenges. Similarly, the English Literature capstone involves intensive semester-long study of a single text, culminating in publicly accessible work. Learning approach and evaluation Our program fosters independent thinking through diverse teaching methods including interactive lectures, seminar discussions, and workshops. These collaborative sessions provide valuable opportunities to engage with key concepts, exchange ideas with peers, and receive personalized guidance from instructors.
