Why choose this program? Our English Literature and History (BA) degree allows you to examine the breadth of English literary works while engaging with history modules that enhance your understanding of past societies' political, social, economic, and cultural frameworks. Our historical knowledge covers an exceptional range of eras, cultures, and regions, including the British Isles, Europe (both eastern and western), Africa, Asia, and the Americas. In English literature, your studies won't be limited to texts - we explore the relationships between literature and film, art, history, technology, language, and daily life, which shapes our teaching approach. The program emphasizes developing your abilities as a thoughtful, well-informed reader and writer capable of clear, stylish, and impactful communication. You'll emerge as an adaptable, highly employable researcher with both independent critical thinking and collaborative skills. By navigating these diverse historical periods and viewpoints, you'll hone intellectual capabilities like critically analyzing literary and historical evidence, evaluating different interpretations, building evidence-based arguments, and articulating ideas effectively both verbally and in writing. Our curriculum lets you examine traditional areas like political, social, cultural, and gender history while also discovering newer fields such as environmental or digital history. This combined degree cultivates essential digital-age competencies: creativity, empathy, analytical reasoning, persuasive communication, and the ability to interrogate assumptions. Learning and evaluation Research forms the foundation of the Cardiff University student experience, with all instruction incorporating current scholarly work. We provide an encouraging academic setting where you'll gain diverse skills and specialized knowledge. Your education will involve various teaching approaches, from interactive lectures and dynamic seminar discussions to group projects and tutorials. These campus-based activities combine with digital platforms to enrich your learning and extend study beyond traditional classrooms. Seminars and workshops offer stimulating opportunities to critically examine core concepts and texts while collaborating closely with instructors and peers. During later stages of your degree, you can pursue independent research projects with guidance from field specialists through personalized instruction (available in history during second and final years, and in English literature during the final year). Our teaching techniques develop intellectual abilities including analytical reasoning, detailed examination, evidence assessment, argument formation, theoretical application, and effective written and oral communication. We also provide support for building teamwork skills, self-directed research capabilities, and time management strategies within a nurturing academic environment.
