Being the sole history degree in the UK housed within a Faculty of Media & Communication, specializing in Modern History, Media History, and Public History, you'll acquire hands-on professional skills that prepare you for diverse career paths. Beyond conventional historical study, you'll examine various subjects through newspapers, digital platforms, audio recordings, television, and film. Your assessments will include not just standard essays and exams but also creative projects like exhibitions, posters, websites, podcasts, blogs, and simulated peace conferences. Collaborate with external partners such as museums, archives, and heritage institutions to explore public history. Design proposals for public history initiatives with organizations like Bournemouth Blind Society, BCP Council, National Motor Museum, and the Museum of East Dorset. Enhance your skills through a four-week or optional 30-week placement, working with entities such as Dorset History Centre, Huntley Film Archives, Highcliffe Castle, RNLI, and ABA Antiques.
