The MSc by Research in Geography (MScRes) is a full-time, one-year program focused primarily on research, distinguishing it from traditional taught Master's degrees. Instead of coursework and dissertation grading, assessment occurs through a viva voce (oral) examination, similar to a PhD process. This program builds expertise in cutting-edge research methodologies (covering essential skills like literature review, ethical considerations, project management, grant applications, and data analysis) and prepares graduates for PhD studies or research roles in academic and scientific institutions.
Participants will engage with the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering Graduate School's training curriculum to refine discipline-specific competencies. Additionally, the University's Doctoral School provides comprehensive postgraduate skill development.
While funded projects for this degree may occasionally be advertised, prospective students can explore opportunities year-round by contacting potential supervisors. Faculty research specialties and contact information are available on the School Research pages. The School not only fosters robust research support but also provides exceptional opportunities to work with world-renowned supervisors. Students gain from our wide-ranging connections with public and private sector organizations at local, national, and global levels.
Career Prospects
Beyond gaining specialized knowledge that leads to targeted employment, this program enhances overall employability by demonstrating independent work capability, analytical and innovative thinking, and conceptual reasoning. Students develop key professional abilities including effective communication, collaboration, leadership, and hands-on experience. Alumni have pursued careers in academic and institutional research, environmental consulting firms, DEFRA, water management agencies, scientific publishing, landscape architecture, and various other fields.
