About This Course This program centers on exploring ocean physics and the interconnected processes between oceans, atmosphere, and ice formations. You'll concentrate on coastal seas surrounding continents and ocean-ice interactions, with fieldwork and hands-on sessions being integral components. The curriculum specifically emphasizes developing industry-relevant expertise for addressing challenges like climate change, rising sea levels, marine pollution, and marine energy development. The final year includes advanced coursework alongside an independent research project.

With over five decades of experience in Physical Oceanography education, we're globally recognized specialists in continental shelf seas and polar ocean research.

This program examines ocean physics and the mechanisms driving Earth's climate system through heat distribution, both currently and historically. You'll investigate how oceans influence global climate patterns and weather generation.

There's significant demand for Physical Oceanographers to address critical challenges including climate forecasting, sea-level projections, pollution tracking, offshore engineering, and marine energy development. The quantitative analysis and computational modeling skills developed in this program are highly valued across multiple industries. Why study at Bangor University? Field studies occur in UNESCO's GeoMôn geopark, Snowdonia National Park, Menai Strait, and Irish Sea.Resources include research vessels, high-performance computing systems, advanced surveying equipment, and oceanographic monitoring systems. We maintain strong collaborations with organizations like the National Oceanography Centre, Met Office, and marine energy sectors.Career paths for our graduates include marine renewable energy, climate research, offshore surveying, coastal management, and science communication.Career ProspectsOur alumni become influential figures in both offshore industries and academic research. This program provides excellent preparation for careers in climate science, marine energy development, offshore operations, environmental assessment, water resource management, coastal conservation, government advisory roles, and science journalism.

Bangor graduates emerge as skilled problem-solvers with strong numerical abilities, critical thinking skills, teamwork experience, and exceptional communication capabilities.
