Reptiles and amphibians are gaining recognition as valuable model organisms across various zoological disciplines, captivating subjects for independent research, and a growing conservation priority due to the concerning population decreases affecting numerous species. This creates a demand for skilled scientists with expertise in these creatures alongside comprehensive zoological training. Our BSc in Zoology with Herpetology merges classical zoological studies with focused instruction on amphibian and reptile biology, diversity, and conservation strategies. Students can participate in a herpetological expedition to Arizona during their second year and engage in field studies across North Wales. The program delivers both fundamental and applied zoological education while developing specialized herpetological competencies. You'll gain extensive hands-on experience through laboratory work and field studies, which form a core component of the curriculum. Additionally, you'll acquire valuable transferable skills including data interpretation, collaborative project work, presentation techniques, and information technology proficiency. As a leading UK research hub for herpetology, we boast dedicated faculty specializing in amphibians and reptiles. Beyond modern biological facilities, our strategic location provides access to diverse ecosystems and significant herpetological sites for fieldwork. The program incorporates contemporary scientific research across multiple disciplines including biogeography, evolutionary studies, genetic population analysis, molecular ecology, and wildlife preservation. Instruction comes from globally recognized herpetology experts covering subjects from evolutionary biology and ecological systems to functional morphology, taxonomic classification, genomic studies, venom research, and snakebite science. Options for Placement Years and International Experience Years are available.
