This program emphasizes the examination of marine sediments through an Earth system science lens. It explores sedimentary processes (including particle formation, movement, and accumulation in marine settings) along with marine sediments and rocks, particularly those from the last 2 million years and earlier geological periods. Geological Oceanographers address challenges like climate and sea-level fluctuations, coastal erosion, marine pollution, sediment buildup in waterways, and offshore engineering for projects involving pipelines, renewable energy installations, and oil/gas exploration. As one of the UK's leading marine science institutions and among Europe's largest, our faculty includes geologists with specialized knowledge in these fields, maintaining strong connections with offshore and hydrocarbon industries. We stand out in the UK by combining sedimentology, geophysics, and geotechnics—a blend highly valued by industry employers seeking skilled professionals for offshore roles. Placement Year and International Experience Year Available Careers Graduates are well-equipped for roles in offshore site assessment for renewable energy projects, research, environmental impact studies, water resource management, coastal planning, government advisory positions, and science communication.
