This program emphasizes the examination of marine sediments through an Earth system science lens. It explores sedimentary processes (including particle formation, movement, and accumulation in marine settings) along with marine sediments and rocks, particularly those from the last 2 million years and earlier geological periods. Geological Oceanographers address challenges like climate and sea-level fluctuations, coastal erosion, marine pollution, sediment buildup in waterways, and offshore engineering for projects involving pipelines, renewable energy installations, and oil/gas exploration.
