Program structure Research degrees (MPhil/PhD) follow a distinct format compared to taught degrees. As a research student, you'll undertake independent research and/or practice-based work. After consulting with the Director of Studies, you'll be assigned one or sometimes two secondary supervisors to help plan your research program and provide regular guidance throughout your studies.Your research may integrate practice, theory, and/or historical aspects of your specialization. You'll receive guidance to clearly define the originality of your chosen topic and determine the best way to present your findings, whether through a written thesis or a combination of practical work (such as exhibitions or installations) and critical analysis.Due to the personalized nature of research degrees, your specific needs (such as studio space or specialized resources) will be discussed with your supervisor.Students initially register for full-time or part-time study toward an MPhil qualification, progressing to PhD status after successful completion of the Confirmation process.
The MPhil degree recognizes systematic, well-documented research demonstrating originality and critical insight, along with a meaningful contribution to scholarship. It can serve as a terminal degree or prepare students for PhD studies. The PhD is awarded for making a significant contribution to knowledge. The thesis should include publishable material and demonstrate greater depth and individual achievement than an MPhil.
You will normally be expected to have: An upper second class honours degree (2:1) from a recognised higher education institution. Also, a Master’s level qualification in an appropriate subject to be considered for registration for MPhil / PhD at AUB. A recent AUB approved English Language Test (ELT) – such as an IELTS 7.0 with a 7.0 in writing and with no other component score lower than 6.0, or an equivalent test score.
