OverviewThe BA (Hons) Costume program equips you with professional skills to excel as a costume maker, tailor, and supervisor across film, theater, and events industries.Program detailsThis comprehensive course explores costume study, interpretation, and creation. You'll develop expertise in crafting historically accurate garments while nurturing creative expression through conceptual costume design. The curriculum also covers essential tailoring and couture dressmaking techniques.Costume supervision forms a core component, involving the transformation of 2D designs into 3D garments through sourcing and procurement. This dynamic role positions you at the center of live productions, ensuring seamless wardrobe department operations.Our costume programs have earned prestigious recognition, with the previous BA (Hons) Costume and Performance Design receiving the Queen's Anniversary Prize for outstanding costume design education serving the UK's creative industries.Throughout the BA (Hons) Costume program, you'll engage in practical projects spanning historical reproduction, contemporary design, and creative tailoring. Beyond technical proficiency, you'll cultivate skills in conceptual interpretation and contextual understanding, grounding your practice in historical and cultural frameworks.Research and social history comprehension form crucial foundations for crafting narrative-driven costumes. The program emphasizes collaboration, offering opportunities to work with students from related disciplines including Design for Costume and Performance, Film Production, Make-up for Media and Performance, and Acting programs on various productions.Placement opportunitiesAll AUB undergraduate programs feature an optional placement year between second and final years. You don't need to decide immediately - our course team will guide you through placement options during your studies, helping you make an informed decision when the time comes.
All applicants must have Level 3 qualifications, which will normally include at least one creative subject. We're looking for between 112 and 120 UCAS Tariff points. You can use the UCAS Tariff Calculator to work out how many points you have. The standard offers for degree courses include : GCE A-Levels – BBB at A-Level excluding General Studies, or 120 UCAS Tariff points, Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Pass, BTEC Level 3 Diploma at Distinction, T-level grade of Merit or above, BTEC/OCR Extended Diploma at Distinction, Merit, Merit, RSL/UAL Diploma – must be combined with other Level 3 qualifications equivalent to 112-120 UCAS Tariff points, RSL/ UAL Extended Diploma at Merit. A combination of BTEC Subsidiary Diploma and A-Levels – equivalent to 120 UCAS Tariff points, Three BTEC Subsidiary Diploma passes at Grade Merit, Scottish Highers – five passes at Grade C or above. AUB welcomes applications from students who have completed, or who are soon to complete, a T level in a relevant subject to their chosen course of study. Applicants will be required to achieve an overall grade of Merit or above. Applicants with VTCT qualifications who've the ability to achieve the minimum stated entry requirements of between 112-120 UCAS points will be considered. Academic IELTS or UKVI IELTS 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each band. We'll accept IELTS Online (Academic) scores. TOEFL iBT with 80 overall with a minimum score of 18 in writing, listening, and reading and 19 in speaking.
