Our doctoral programs in research enable you to either participate in existing projects or pursue your own academic interests in Graphic Design and Typography, guided by our expert faculty. Grounded in your specific field of study, you'll situate your research within contemporary critical discussions, investigating current production and distribution approaches on both national and global scales. Your work may be practice-based, primarily developed through design initiatives.
You'll receive guidance from two primary supervisors, with access to additional faculty support when needed. Our supervisory team possesses extensive knowledge across most graphic design and typography domains, particularly specializing in type design and historical typography. As part of Cambridge School of Art, you'll join a dynamic, expanding community of scholars working across diverse disciplines. We offer multiple research platforms that highlight our interdisciplinary approach, such as the Typographic Research Group, and maintain strong connections with professional associations like Atypi, Typographic Research Initiative, Typecon (USA), along with various academic and industry publications. Opportunities exist to engage in scholarly publications, exhibitions, and conferences, allowing you to acquire significant research experience while enriching Cambridge School of Art's intellectual environment.
