Our doctoral programs in History enable you to participate in existing research initiatives or pursue your own academic interests under the guidance of our expert faculty. You'll receive mentorship from two primary supervisors, with access to additional specialists when needed. Our advisors possess extensive knowledge across historical disciplines, particularly in Labor studies, British imperial history, regional histories, gender and sexuality studies, racial dynamics in 19th-20th century Britain, Russian history, poverty studies, consumer culture, and popular culture.
You'll benefit from a dynamic research atmosphere with robust connections to academic networks at Anglia Ruskin and beyond, including collaborations with Cambridge University's CRASSH (Centre for Research in Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities). Our department houses the Labor History Research Unit (LHRU), which advances innovative perspectives on both British and global labor history through academic events, graduate programs, and publications, while also contributing to other faculty research groups like the StoryLab Research Institute.
Our program features numerous research activities, including departmental seminars where you can present your work in an encouraging academic environment. These gatherings, combined with our digital platforms, facilitate interdisciplinary connections with fellow researchers. Your specialized studies will be complemented by university-wide professional development workshops covering essential research skills such as ethical considerations, presentation techniques, intellectual property rights, and digital research methodologies.
