Abertay's Sport and Exercise Sciences Division specializes in women's sports equality, health risks of sedentary lifestyles, exercise-based health interventions, high-intensity training, elite athletic performance, and healthy aging. Much of this research concentrates on groups with protected characteristics (such as age, gender, and disability) and seeks to advance duty of care initiatives, an increasingly important concern in modern sports. This work aligns with our collaborations with Police Scotland, Active Schools, national sports organizations, charities, and small-to-medium enterprises.
The Division operates two dedicated human performance labs for physiological assessment, along with specialized facilities for strength training and biomechanics research. These resources provide access to advanced equipment including EMG and ECG devices, ergometers, biofeedback systems, motion capture technology, force measurement tools, metabolic analyzers, and body composition assessment instruments.
Collaboration with other departments grants access to sophisticated biochemical and molecular physiology equipment, as well as opportunities to study human movement in collaboration with our game design specialists.
Abertay has developed performance research partnerships with major Scottish sports organizations including the Scottish Rugby Union, Dundee United FC, Dundee FC, and the Fife Flyers ice hockey team, creating numerous innovative research possibilities.
Our research programs equip graduates for successful academic careers while also providing pathways to diverse professional opportunities beyond higher education.
