This represents a possible research degree field, pending University approval. Those considering postgraduate research in this discipline should consult with the Dean to review their proposed study plan.
The postgraduate environment in Sociology focuses on students pursuing an MA by Research, MPhil, or PhD. As part of Abertay's research community, you'll work alongside colleagues from various disciplines. Our institution has played a significant role in major European funding initiatives that investigate the relationship between technology, societal change, and social innovation, along with studying social network patterns for collective understanding.
Faculty members have guided numerous research initiatives, many involving partnerships with non-academic organizations in fields such as:
Policy sociology - covering health, education, youth development, environmental issues, policy formation, community engagement, and professional standards.
Criminal justice - impacting law enforcement and judicial system practices.
Creative industries - focusing on digital design methodologies, media educators, artists, and exhibition organizers.
We maintain collaborative relationships with criminal justice experts through the Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR), computing specialists via the Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SICSA), and media educators through the Association for Media Education in Scotland (AMES).
Our research degrees equip graduates for successful academic careers while also creating pathways to diverse professional opportunities beyond academia, including policy development roles.
