Abertay's Sport and Exercise Sciences Division specializes in women's sports equity, health risks of sedentary lifestyles, exercise-based health interventions, high-intensity training, elite athletic performance, and healthy aging. Much of this research centers on populations with protected characteristics (such as age, gender, and disability), aligning with the growing importance of duty of care in modern sports. This work supports collaborations with Police Scotland, Active Schools, national governing bodies, charities, and small-to-medium enterprises.
The Division features two dedicated human performance labs for physiological assessment, along with specialized facilities for strength training and biomechanics research. These resources provide access to advanced equipment including EMG/ECG systems, ergometers, biofeedback technology, motion capture systems, force measurement tools, gas/blood analyzers, and body composition assessment devices.
Collaboration with other departments allows utilization of specialized biochemical and molecular physiology equipment, plus opportunities to study human movement through partnerships with game design specialists.
Abertay has developed performance research partnerships with major Scottish sports organizations including the Scottish Rugby Union, Dundee United FC, Dundee FC, and the Fife Flyers ice hockey team, creating numerous innovative research possibilities.
Our research programs equip graduates for academic careers while also providing pathways to diverse professional opportunities beyond academia.
