This represents a possible research degree field, pending University approval. Those considering pursuing research in this area should consult with the Dean to review their proposed project.
Abertay University has investigated sound and music for interactive media applications through teaching and research since introducing game programs over twenty years ago. Currently, our researchers lead in developing dynamic audio for gaming, immersive environments, artistic installations, and interactive performances.
Studies may examine both hands-on and conceptual approaches to sound and music. Abertay's key strengths include audio synthesis, implementing adaptive audio in game engines, and investigating sound design for virtual and augmented reality applications.
This research area utilizes the Emergent Technology Centre's resources and nearby Recording Studio facilities. Dedicated audio laboratories, recording gear, and specialized software support researchers developing, implementing, and evaluating interactive sound systems.
As the principal partner for InGAME (AHRC-funded Innovation for Games and Media Enterprise), Abertay connects postgraduate students with R&D initiatives and industry professionals. Dundee's thriving games sector - one of Britain's most established - provides extensive networking opportunities with local, national, and international studios.
MPhil typically requires 2 years of full-time study
