Abertay's Psychology and Forensic Sciences Division plays a significant role in facilitating research degrees, including collaborative programs with the NHS, regional education boards, Police Scotland, and various business and digital technology sectors.
As part of the Scottish Graduate School for Social Sciences, Abertay's psychology researchers work interdisciplinarily with peers from other academic departments. The university specializes in psychophysics and vision science, numerical cognition, language acquisition and processing, comparative and evolutionary psychology, forensic and investigative psychology, social psychology and self-perception studies, laterality, cognitive neuroscience, as well as dance and movement perception.
The psychology research facilities at Abertay are comprehensively equipped, featuring nine dedicated faculty members, specialized research laboratories, and experimental cubicles. The labs contain high-performance computers running specialized software (E-prime, Superlab, N-Vivo, Paradigm, SPSS, Observer XT), along with notable hardware including an anechoic chamber, remote-controlled CCTV systems, SMI 3.0 and X HED Eye-Trackers, GSR equipment, EEG and tCDS devices, and the BioHarness Telemetry System. Researchers additionally benefit from cross-departmental access to virtual reality labs and other digital technologies.
These research programs equip graduates for academic and research careers, as well as various professional opportunities beyond academia.
