This represents a possible research degree field, pending University approval. Those considering postgraduate research in this discipline should consult with the Dean to explore their proposed study.
Abertay's Sport and Exercise Sciences Department specializes in gender equity in sports, health risks of inactive lifestyles, exercise-based health interventions, high-intensity training, athletic performance optimization, and wellness in aging. Much of this research prioritizes groups with protected characteristics (such as age, gender, or disability) and supports the evolving duty of care framework in modern sports. This aligns with our collaborations with Police Scotland, Active Schools, sports governing bodies, nonprofit organizations, and small-to-medium enterprises.
The Department houses two specialized human performance labs for physiological assessment, plus dedicated facilities for strength training and biomechanics research. These resources provide cutting-edge equipment including EMG/ECG systems, ergometers, biofeedback technology, motion capture devices, force measurement tools, metabolic analyzers, and body composition assessment systems.
Cross-disciplinary projects allow utilization of advanced biochemical and molecular physiology instruments, alongside innovative motion analysis through partnerships with our game design specialists.
Our performance research collaborations include major Scottish sports organizations like the Scottish Rugby Union, Dundee United FC, Dundee FC, and the Fife Flyers ice hockey team, creating dynamic new research possibilities.
Our research degrees equip graduates for academic careers while also providing transferable skills for diverse professional pathways beyond higher education.
