The postgraduate environment in Sociology focuses on students pursuing an MA by Research, MPhil, or PhD. As part of Abertay's research community, you'll engage in interdisciplinary collaboration with peers from various departments. Our institution has played a significant role in major European funding initiatives that investigate the relationship between technology, societal development, and innovative social solutions, along with studying social network patterns for collective understanding.
Faculty members have guided numerous research initiatives, many involving partnerships with non-academic organizations in fields such as:
Policy sociology - covering health systems, educational frameworks, youth development, environmental issues, policy formation, community engagement, and professional methodologies.
Criminal justice - impacting law enforcement strategies and judicial system approaches.
Creative industries - focusing on digital design methodologies, media educators, artistic practitioners, and exhibition organizers.
We maintain collaborative relationships with criminal justice experts via the Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR), computing specialists through the Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SICSA), and media educators via the Association for Media Education in Scotland (AMES).
Our research degrees equip graduates for successful academic careers while also creating pathways to diverse professional opportunities beyond academia, including policy development roles.
MPhil typically requires 2 years of full-time study
