Our Accounting faculty possess diverse expertise spanning three key disciplines: Sustainable Accounting Practices, Petroleum Accounting, and Governance & Anti-Corruption Studies.

Potential research in renewable energy and environmental accountability could explore financial/non-financial metrics, reporting standards, and economic assessments concerning traditional and alternative energy sources, the shift toward clean energy, carbon emissions, and global sustainability targets.

Abertay has established expertise in Oil and Gas Accounting and Finance (OGAF), with a proven track record of doctoral supervision, research initiatives, and publications in prestigious journals. Our work has examined corporate environmental reporting, decommissioning challenges in North Sea and Nigerian operations, policy implications for the UK government, gas flaring incidents, oil spills, and environmental disclosure practices. These studies reveal how companies use environmental reporting to justify operations or present favorable financial positions. Current doctoral projects aim to expand this research by investigating connections between environmental disclosures and corporate outcomes, regulatory oversight, international standards implementation, and hydrocarbon reserve valuation.

Corruption research incorporates multidisciplinary perspectives from legal studies, economic theory, organizational leadership, and public administration. This interdisciplinary approach enables comprehensive examination of institutional governance. Previous investigations have analyzed corruption's economic consequences, gender disparities in corrupt practices, and systemic governance failures.

This research program suits candidates pursuing careers in national energy sectors, renewable energy industries, or international energy organizations. Abertay's research degrees also provide excellent preparation for academic and research professions.
