Elevate your musical expertise and concentrate on advanced research with the MMus program. This intensive one-year Master's degree allows you to specialize in composition (including sonic arts), performance, musicology, ethnomusicology, music theory, or music education while preparing you for potential PhD studies. Ideal candidates hold a Bachelor of Music (Honours) with First or Second Class honors seeking to advance their academic journey. Specific entry requirements apply to each specialization - performance applicants must audition, while composition candidates present a portfolio. All prospective students must submit a research intent statement with their application and a formal research proposal within one month of enrollment for NZSM Postgraduate Committee approval. The program primarily focuses on a research thesis, though you may incorporate 30 credits of coursework. Composition and Performance students undertake either a 120-point thesis (combining a 25,000-word exegesis with creative output) or a 90-point option (featuring creative work plus a 10,000-20,000 word report alongside 30 credits from approved 400/500-level courses).
