A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program focuses on conducting innovative, long-term research under the guidance of an academic advisor. This path allows you to uncover new knowledge, tackle significant contemporary challenges, push your limits, and cultivate both general and specialized abilities. Enhance your understanding of Māori traditions and language while honing research techniques to explore Māori history, current realities, and future prospects. Collaborate with Te Kawa a Māui—School of Māori Studies faculty members engaged in ongoing research projects. With diverse academic specialties, they offer wide-ranging knowledge and perspectives. Examine topics in Māori communities, explore various research approaches, and strengthen your te reo comprehension by analyzing traditional songs, proverbs, prayers, and modern works. Instructors employ multiple teaching strategies to accommodate different learning preferences. The majority of courses combine daytime on-campus lectures with tutorial sessions. Skilled mentors will guide you through self-directed research initiatives.

Qualification Requirements
Research degree such as Honours or Master's by thesis from a New Zealand university with an average grade of B+ or higher, an approved international equivalent, or other approved evidence of adequate training and ability.
If you have a four-year Bachelor's degree graded in a four-point GPA system, you will need to have a GPA of at least 3.0 out of 4.0.
If you have a Bachelor's degree graded in the British system (including from India), you must have been awarded the degree with first or upper second-class Honours.
Either a Bachelor's degree with Honours or a Master's degree from a New Zealand university, with an overall GPA of no less than 6 (letter grade B+),
Or to be currently enrolled in a Master's thesis at the Victoria University of Wellington and meet the requirements for conversion to a PhD,
