A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program focuses on conducting groundbreaking, long-term research under the guidance of an academic advisor. This path allows you to pioneer discoveries, tackle pressing global challenges, push your limits, and cultivate both versatile and specialized abilities. Expand your creative horizons in an environment where artistry and academia intersect. You'll collaborate with award-winning translators and specialists who are at the forefront of contemporary discussions about translating diverse literary forms—including novels, poetry, plays, screenplays, and narrative nonfiction. As part of the School of Languages and Cultures, you can explore translation intricacies between languages offered by the institution—Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. You'll actively participate in the New Zealand Centre for Literary Translation, established to advance the study of translation theory and practice while honoring both local and international authors. This dynamic research center brings together literary translators from the School and other language programs at Victoria University, drawing global students. You'll exchange support with fellow translators, raise awareness about literary translation's importance, advocate for translating New Zealand authors, and engage in cross-border partnerships.
