A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program requires conducting innovative, long-term research under the guidance of a faculty advisor. This advanced degree allows you to pioneer groundbreaking findings, tackle significant contemporary challenges, push your limits, and cultivate both versatile and specialized abilities. Enhance your expertise in mathematics, physics, computer science, and earth sciences to investigate Earth's composition and atmospheric phenomena. Offered by the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences, Victoria University's Geophysics program focuses on two primary disciplines—Solid Earth Geophysics and Meteorology. Meteorology - Meteorological studies are conducted in collaboration with MetService professionals. You'll collaborate with Dr. Jim McGregor and Professor James Renwick to analyze worldwide and local climate patterns, as well as precipitation prediction using global and regional weather modeling. This is the sole New Zealand university providing meteorology degrees. Solid Earth - This concentration explores the physical mechanisms driving seismic events, volcanic eruptions, crustal movements, and geothermal systems. Research involves analyzing Earth's architecture and movement through seismic, geodetic, electromagnetic, and gravitational measurements, connecting these observations to plate tectonic theory.
