A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree involves original and sustained research, mentored by an academic supervisor. It’s an opportunity to make new discoveries, address some of the big issues of our time, challenge yourself, and develop a mix of transferable and specialised skills. Make a difference to the endangered species and habitats of the world. Get the critical, theoretical and practical skills needed to assess, develop and implement strategies for ecological restoration and reconciliation. Learn the theory and process behind the restoration of flora and fauna to degraded sites, and the reconcilation of biodiversity in human-dominated environments. Gain an understanding of issues in contemporary environmental and biodiversity management in New Zealand and around the world. You'll visit a range of restoration projects including the Zealandia ecosanctuary, and develop your own formal restoration plan. Look at the environmental economics around conservation policy and explore the socio-political dimensions of conservation. You'll also have the opportunity to build an understanding of Māori, and other indigenous peoples', perspectives on the environment. Along with the benefit of presentations by leading New Zealand scientists and restoration practitioners, you'll study with the School of Biological Sciences, and working in modern facilities with the latest equipment.
