The Master of Media and Creative Technologies in Screen and Media Studies equips media creators, designers, and producers with advanced knowledge, technical abilities, and creative skills to stand out in competitive creative industries.
Offered through the Te Kura Toi School of Arts, School of Social Sciences, School of Design, and Waikato Management School, the MMCT program deepens expertise in media studies. Its national and international appeal stems from giving students a competitive advantage while preparing them to become innovative leaders in the evolving creative sector.
Guided by globally recognized faculty, students create a professional portfolio of audiovisual work across diverse formats like short films, documentaries, animations, photography, AI/VR projects, scripts, digital content, podcasts, and multimedia installations. This self-directed approach cultivates unique creative voices suited for public showcases and media careers.
The MMCT emphasizes hands-on collaboration, technical mastery, and creative development while providing rigorous academic training in research methodologies and critical analysis for postgraduate study.

Qualification Requirements

Candidates for the Degree must have

  • qualified for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Media and Creative Technologies of the University of Waikato with at least a B grade average across the 300 level papers, or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent, and
  • satisfied the prerequisites for graduate study in the subject(s) being presented for the Degree, including through submission of a portfolio of previous work, at levels considered appropriate by the Academic Board.

In exceptional circumstances, based on academic merit and relevant experience, candidates who do not meet the requirements of these regulations may be considered for admission subject to the completion of any qualifying papers the Academic Board may prescribe which must be completed either prior to or concurrently.

English Language Requirements

  • an Academic IELTS Overall score of at least 6.5 (with no less than 6.0 in any band), or
  • a TOEFL iBT (Internet Based TOEFL) score of 90 with a Writing score of 21, or
  • a TOEFL iBT Home Edition overall score of 90 with a Writing score of 21, or
  • a PTE Academic overall score of 56 with no band less than 46, or
  • a B2 First (formally known as Cambridge English: First (FCE)) with an overall score of 176 and no bands below 169, or
  • a C2 Proficiency (formally known as Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)) with an overall score of 176 and no bands below 169, or
  • a Michigan English Test (formally known as Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)) minimum score of 59.
