The University confers the Doctor of Philosophy degree based on research conducted under the guidance of a minimum of two faculty members. This qualification can alternatively be earned as a PhD with Published Works or a PhD incorporating Creative Practice.
The candidate's original research must be documented in a thesis, which may incorporate already published or forthcoming papers. This thesis should present the research rationale, describe the methodology, and detail the discoveries and outcomes. Unlike other degrees, this program does not involve any coursework requirements.

Qualification Requirements

A PhD consists of research carried out under the supervision of at least two staff members. The research, which must be the candidate's own work. The thesis is required to present the case for the research, outline the research undertaken and the findings and conclusions of that research. There is no coursework for this degree.
A bachelors with honours or masters degree with a research component of at least 30 points and have achieved at least Second Class Honours (First Division) or Distinction.
IELTS 6.5 overall (with no less than 6.0 in any band)
iBT (internet based TOEFL) 90 with a score of 21 in writing
Pearson PTE Academic Overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills below 50
University of Waikato College Successful completion of Level 8 with a B grade average in the Certificate of Attainment in Academic English (CAAE)
