Legal professionals, including lawyers and judges, will guide and evaluate your law coursework while offering insightful feedback. This direct engagement with the field will give you a competitive edge when pursuing permanent employment. At Waikato, you'll develop essential professional skills—from client interviews and courtroom advocacy to settlement negotiations and merger contract drafting. You'll examine legal systems across local, national, and international settings while studying financial markets, corporate operations, government entities, trusts, and iwi governance. Numerous chances exist to apply hands-on learning to actual legal challenges. Starting in your second year, you can gain professional exposure through placements at the Hamilton District Community Law Centre, prosecution and defense offices, various councils, law firms, and other institutions. You may also qualify for the National Summer Clerkship Program.
Waikato law students automatically advance to their second year without additional selection—our admission process occurs during initial enrollment. Once accepted into the Bachelor of Laws program, maintaining passing grades ensures continuous progression through each academic year until graduation.
