The importance of Sports, Exercise, and Health as an academic discipline has grown significantly in recent years. For instance, sports serve as a powerful tool for achieving various societal objectives, such as enhancing health and education, fostering social cohesion, decreasing crime rates, and strengthening international diplomacy. Experts often highlight physical inactivity as one of the most pressing public health challenges of the 21st century. In New Zealand, sports play a vital economic role, contributing over NZ$5.2 billion (2.8% of GDP) and employing more than 50,000 people, while also holding deep cultural and social significance.
Students pursuing this degree through coursework and a thesis typically complete their studies in two to three years of full-time equivalent study, while those opting for a thesis-only pathway usually finish within one to two years. Any exceptions to these timelines require approval from the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences).
