Launched in 1992, the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSc) program was designed to fulfill the medical diagnostic field's demand for a scientifically rigorous academic credential. This four-year curriculum provides extensive training in health sciences along with focused instruction in key laboratory specialties like microbiology, biochemistry, and hematology. The majority of students begin their studies through the University of Otago's Health Sciences First Year pathway. Upon completion, graduates qualify for prompt professional certification as medical laboratory scientists in New Zealand, with their credentials being widely recognized internationally. These professionals contribute significantly to disease diagnosis and treatment. Globally, the field faces a growing shortage of qualified medical laboratory scientists. The degree also opens doors to advanced studies in medical laboratory science or related health disciplines, including forensic pathology and molecular pathology.
