Introduced in 1992, the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSc) program was designed to address the medical diagnostic field's demand for a scientifically rigorous academic qualification. This four-year curriculum provides thorough training in health sciences fundamentals along with specialized instruction across multiple laboratory disciplines, including microbiology, biochemistry, and hematology. The majority of students begin their studies through the University of Otago's Health Sciences First Year pathway.
Upon completion, graduates qualify for prompt professional recognition and registration as medical laboratory scientists within New Zealand, with their credentials being widely accepted internationally. These professionals contribute significantly to disease diagnosis and treatment. Globally, the demand for qualified medical laboratory scientists continues to grow. The degree also serves as a foundation for advanced studies, whether in medical laboratory science itself or related health science fields like forensic pathology or molecular pathology.
