The sports industry is experiencing rapid growth, intersecting with diverse fields like education, culture, business, healthcare, and tourism. As a globally recognized applied discipline, the Sport Development and Management major builds upon the worldwide expansion of sport science programs and sport management specializations.
Otago provides New Zealand's exclusive Sport Development and Management program, available as either a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree, accommodating students with preferences for scientific or arts/humanities-focused studies.
This program enables students to complement their major with a minor in related disciplines such as Exercise and Sport Science, Management, Marketing, Media and Communication Studies, Psychology, Geography, or Education.
Graduates can pursue diverse careers including roles as sport development officers, administrators, and managers within national sports organizations, regional sports bodies, community trusts, government agencies, and local governments. The field also encompasses teaching, coaching, youth work, sports marketing, and school sports coordination - all professions dedicated to enhancing individual and community engagement with sports and physical activity.
