Acquire the essential abilities to assist and guide individuals dealing with difficult circumstances.
You'll cultivate the qualities required for professional social work in New Zealand through studies that combine practical experience with community engagement in the classroom. Grounded in principles of bi-culturalism and anti-oppressive approaches, this four-year program progresses from foundational concepts like professionalism, research methods, analytical reasoning, and evidence-based decision-making in your initial year to advanced application in subsequent years.
Every year features a hands-on practice component connecting academic learning with real-world settings. During years two through four, this includes substantial placements within social work organizations.
Note that field placements in years 3 and 4 may occur outside Christchurch, and possessing a full driver's license is necessary as alternative agency options may be restricted.
The curriculum involves two mandatory 24-hour marae visits (including overnight stays). Upon completion, you'll embody the professional ethics outlined by the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers and Social Workers Registration Board, qualifying for provisional registration. There's presently high demand for social workers, particularly from these communities: Māori, Pacific peoples, migrants, refugees, men, and individuals with disabilities - applications from these groups are welcomed. Prospective part-time first-year students must be engaged in social services (paid or voluntary). This program requires assignment completion using word processing software.
According to our latest graduate survey, 81% of 2016 Bachelor of Social Work alumni secured employment (Ara Graduate Outcome Survey, 2016). Part-time study options extend up to a decade.
