To earn a PhD, students must produce a substantial and novel addition to their field through one of these options, each comparable to 70,000–100,000 words: a traditional research thesis; a thesis incorporating published papers; or a creative output like artwork or design accompanied by an analytical exegesis. Candidates must perform highly original research, autonomously plan and execute their project from start to finish, gain deep methodological expertise in their subject area, and effectively communicate their findings to appropriate audiences.
