This distinctive cross-disciplinary program combines strengths from the School of Design, School of Medicine, Kemmy Business School, and the clinical expertise of University Hospital Limerick.
The program primarily operates in a studio-based setting, fostering innovation, collaborative learning, and interdisciplinary discovery. With an emphasis on project work and ongoing evaluation, core modules focus on teamwork, creative thinking, and human-centered design approaches to quickly research, analyze, and prototype healthcare solutions. Students gain experience conducting clinical design research to identify needs and develop design frameworks. They employ brainstorming methods to generate concepts that evolve into polished solutions while building knowledge in medical ethics, clinical protocols for device development, and regulatory standards.
The curriculum covers entrepreneurial principles and the critical thinking skills needed to launch innovative healthcare ventures. Students also explore concepts of wellness, illness, and disability, along with health determinants, disparities, and preventive measures. Additionally, the program provides foundational knowledge in emergency care anatomy and physiology, disease etiology and manifestations, and various treatment modalities.

Qualification Requirements

The minimum entry requirement to the programme is a 2:2, (Level 8 - National Qualifications Authority of Ireland) undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a relevant or appropriate subject as outlined below, or equivalent prior learning that is recognised by the University as meeting this requirement.
Applications are welcome from students of non-design backgrounds who are interested in innovating solutions for tomorrow's health and wellbeing challenges and opportunities. Examples include, but are not limited to, technical disciplines (science & engineering), business, medicine and allied health professions, and social sciences.
Where applicants are non-native English language speakers, certified achievement in TOEFL or IELTS Standard English Language Competency Test will be required. An interview may be part of the admission process.
