The Master of Science in Civil Engineering offers specialized education in cutting-edge civil engineering subjects. This program is carefully crafted to address the demands of the industry, producing graduates with exceptional capabilities in design, analytical thinking, and professional communication. Furthermore, the curriculum meets Engineers Ireland's criteria for a Master's qualification in engineering, which serves as the baseline requirement for achieving Chartered Engineer recognition. The standard accreditation procedure will apply to this newly introduced program. Program alumni enjoy excellent career prospects both domestically and globally, with opportunities in various civil engineering specialties such as environmental and energy systems, geotechnical studies, structural design, water resource management, sustainable engineering practices, and construction administration.
This intensive program runs for one academic year (three semesters) and demands full-time on-campus participation.
The curriculum structure is detailed below. During the initial two semesters, participants will complete compulsory foundational courses along with a selection of specialized advanced subjects (including both technical and non-technical electives). All students will undertake a continuous research initiative throughout all three semesters, culminating in a thesis submission at the conclusion of the final semester.
The School's research initiatives address diverse societal challenges where civil engineering expertise provides innovative solutions, particularly in environmental and energy systems, structural design, geotechnical applications, water treatment technologies, and transportation infrastructure. The School maintains collaborative ties with the prestigious Bernal Institute, a renowned research center.
Successful program completion requires earning 90 credits, distributed as 51 credits from coursework and 39 credits from research activities, as specified in the following table.
