This program focuses on exploring the interconnected nature of human rights and criminal justice, which have often been taught as separate subjects. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of this evolving legal field while evaluating the benefits of integrating human rights principles into criminal justice frameworks. Key topics include policing and human rights, along with European Convention on Human Rights law, with the goal of developing both broad and specialized competencies relevant to contemporary criminal justice systems in Ireland and worldwide.
The Law School has a proven track record of enhancing students' transferable skills through initiatives like Advanced Lawyering, Moot Court competitions, and innovative core courses such as Alternative Dispute Resolution. These offerings cultivate comprehensive analytical abilities while directly improving essential professional skills including problem-solving, decision-making, communication, collaboration, strategic planning, critical analysis, and interpersonal relations. Complemented by mandatory clinical education components, these experiences create a cohesive learning environment that helps students connect academic knowledge with real-world applications. Consequently, our alumni have achieved prominent positions as partners in leading law and accounting firms, barristers, senior government officials, NGO leaders, EU professionals, academics, and corporate executives.
Graduate students similarly benefit from our research excellence, whether pursuing a general LLM, specialized LLM (in International Commercial Law, Human Rights in Criminal Justice, or European and Comparative Law), or doctoral studies alongside our substantial research student community.
The School maintains robust collaborations with legal practitioners, government agencies, NGOs, and other key stakeholders across all legal fields. We've established particularly productive partnerships with An Garda Síochána and the Revenue Commissioners. Our global connections enable student placements in North America, while full academic year exchanges are available with European institutions in Malta, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, and the Netherlands. Additional opportunities exist in German, French, and Spanish universities where instruction occurs in the local language. Our diverse international student community contributes significantly to the Law School's dynamic environment. In a recent survey of over 5,000 international students across Irish universities, UL ranked highest for student experience, support services, and welcoming atmosphere. The EU Commission's latest data also places UL among the top 100 Erasmus host institutions globally.
