The University of Limerick's School of Education stands as the leading provider of post-primary teacher training nationwide and holds a position among the global top 100 institutions for Education programs. Additionally, UL ranks in Europe's top 75 universities for outstanding teaching quality. This specialized degree program focuses on preparing educators in Mathematics and Computer Science, equipping graduates with the necessary expertise to teach the Irish secondary school Mathematics syllabus. Students will also gain qualifications to instruct the new Leaving Certificate Computer Science program, along with junior cycle coding and digital literacy short courses.
For mathematics instruction, the curriculum covers essential areas like Differential and Integral Calculus, Statistics and Probability, Algebra, and Geometry - all meeting the Teaching Council's standards for mathematics educators. The Computer Science component includes Programming, Software Development, Web Development, Computer Graphics, and Data Structures and Algorithms, incorporating global best practices in the discipline. Educational coursework enhances understanding of adolescent learning processes, current educational challenges, classroom methodologies, lesson planning, inclusive education approaches, and curriculum policy matters. The program features two practical teaching placements where students gain hands-on experience delivering both mathematics and computer science instruction across all secondary grade levels.
