The University of Limerick's School of Education stands as the leading provider of post-primary teacher training in Ireland and holds a position among the world's top 100 institutions for Education programs. UL also ranks among Europe's top 75 universities for outstanding teaching quality.
Similar to other teacher education courses at UL, the B.Sc.(Ed) in Physics and Chemistry follows a concurrent approach, combining academic and professional training throughout the program with core science modules. The initial two years establish fundamental knowledge in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Mathematics, alongside Education and Pedagogical studies, specifically preparing students to teach the updated junior cycle science curriculum.
During years three and four, students advance their physical science studies while deepening their educational training, including specialized preparation for the revised senior cycle physics and chemistry syllabi. The program's science pedagogy components were developed in partnership with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (creators of the new syllabi) and Junior Cycle for Teachers (responsible for teacher professional development). Notably, the course director participated in designing the junior cycle curriculum, ensuring graduates are fully equipped with internationally recognized best practices for science education in Irish schools.
The final year features a research project in Physics, Chemistry, Science Education, or Educational Theory, requiring students to showcase research skills, literature review capabilities, and analytical interpretation - cultivating their ability to study their own teaching practice, a priority for both the Teaching Council and the Inspectorate's School Self-Evaluation Process.
The program includes two teaching practice placements: a six-week session in Year 2 and a ten-week placement in Year 4, both supervised by academic staff with accompanying coursework requirements.
