This academic field within the School boasts growing research initiatives, with postgraduate candidates (both PhD and MSc) and postdoctoral fellows regularly participating in joint ventures with scholars at NUI Galway, across Ireland, and internationally. Current research focuses on three interconnected domains: statistics, encompassing advanced techniques in statistical modeling such as random effects and mixed models, semiparametric Bayesian analysis, mixture models, and data smoothing.
The institution maintains a strong tradition of outstanding and creative teaching. Faculty members have received four President's teaching honors and earned numerous additional nominations. The curriculum spans various disciplines, including mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, and bioinformatics. To be eligible to enter on a programme of study and research for the degree of PhD you must have reached a high honours standard at the examination for the primary degree or presented such evidence as will satisfy the Head of School and the College of your fitness.

IELTS: 6.5 overall, no less than 5.5 in any one component; Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88 overall (7 Listening, 16 Speaking, 18 Writing, 8 Reading); Pearson PTE: 61 overall, no less than 48 in any one component.
