Our doctoral program offers a structured approach focused on scientific research, culminating in a PhD thesis submission after four years. Students participate in professional development modules to build essential transferable skills for today's workforce, selecting from both required and optional courses, typically completing 30 credits.
The School of Chemistry engages in diverse research fields such as Synthesis, Natural Products, Computational Chemistry, Analytical Methods, Physical Chemistry, and Materials Science. Our publication output in peer-reviewed journals has increased substantially, with nearly 380 PhD graduates since 1970. About 60% work in Irish industry, while others pursue careers in public service, education, or internationally.
The School of Chemistry at University of Galway maintains a strong research and publication presence across analytical, organic, inorganic, physical, and natural chemistry journals. Our current research community includes over 60 postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows working across multiple specialized areas.
To be eligible to enter on a programme of study and research for the degree of PhD you must have reached at minimum a high honours standard at the examination for the primary degree or presented such evidence as will satisfy the Head of School and the College of your fitness.
English Language Requirements
IELTS: 6.5 overall, no less than 5.5 in any one component; Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88 overall (7 Listening, 16 Speaking, 18 Writing, 8 Reading); Pearson PTE: 61 overall, no less than 48 in any one component.
