The Italian Studies program at the University of Galway offers deep engagement with 19th and 20th century Italian culture and literature while pioneering interdisciplinary approaches that connect literary studies, philosophy, linguistics, translation, and film studies through innovative methodologies. Italian intellectual traditions significantly shape contemporary critical thought, and this program stands among the few in Ireland and the UK where students can explore these influences across humanities disciplines, including comparative literature. Participants develop expertise in translation theory and practice under the guidance of subtitling specialists, while benefiting from our progressive language instruction methods and technological applications in Italian studies.
Doctoral candidates in the Structured PhD program access interdisciplinary coursework options that:
deepen subject-matter expertise in their specialization
provide research-essential competencies, such as supplementary language training
support professional growth through activities like international conference presentations
improve career prospects via practical training sessions and skill-building workshops.
Each researcher receives guidance from a primary Supervisor(s) and a Graduate Research Committee composed of seasoned scholars who assist in designing their academic journey and provide continuous research support.
Candidates should have an honours degree in Italian; Second Class Honours, Grade 1 minimum (or equivalent international qualification).
