The Structured PhD program offers doctoral candidates access to diverse interdisciplinary coursework. Students can choose from an extensive selection of modules designed to: strengthen expertise in their chosen discipline, provide essential research skills needed for their dissertation (such as additional language training), support professional growth (including opportunities like presenting at international conferences), and improve career prospects through general skill development (like career preparation sessions and technology training).
Every candidate works with a primary Supervisor(s) and a Graduate Research Committee composed of seasoned academics to design their academic path and receive continuous research guidance.
A doctoral thesis must offer significant, novel contributions to its academic field. The PhD is granted for research that meets the standard of "publishable quality, either in full or part, as a scholarly work" (University of Galway Calendar). Typically, English-language dissertations range between 60,000 and 80,000 words, with most research projects spanning four years.
The minimum qualification necessary to be considered for admission to the PhD programme is a high honours, primary degree (or equivalent international qualification), or ’other such evidence as will satisfy the Head of Department and the Faculty of his/her fitness’ (NUI Galway Calendar). It is more usual, however, for successful applicants to have already gained a Master's degree.
