Diabetes has become a worldwide health crisis, projected to affect more than 600 million individuals by 2030—approximately 10% of the global population. As a result, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared diabetes an epidemic demanding immediate preventive and management measures. Ireland's Health Service Executive has similarly prioritized diabetes in its national policies and clinical strategies. This chronic metabolic disorder can lead to severe cardiovascular complications and increased mortality if not properly controlled. Effective management focuses on regulating critical health markers like blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol, alongside encouraging healthy habits such as physical activity, balanced nutrition, and smoking cessation. However, meeting these medical and lifestyle targets remains highly difficult. Given its rising prevalence and strain on healthcare systems, specialized training in diabetes care—especially for nurses, who play a vital role in multidisciplinary diabetes teams—has become essential.
