Cell and gene therapy emerged as the most promising medical breakthrough, with 79% of 151 global biopharmaceutical manufacturers in NIBRT's survey (the Irish National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training) highlighting it in their Trends in Manufacturing Report. These same companies face challenges recruiting qualified professionals, particularly bioprocess and automation engineers.
The University of Galway's MSc in Cellular Manufacturing & Therapy has two core aims: A) delivering structured education in clinical cellular bioprocessing and B) establishing a strong scientific foundation for advancing cellular treatments. The program structure equally covers cellular therapy science (through 3 modules), bioprocessing, and manufacturing regulations (in 2 modules), with elective options in cancer biology, business, clinical trials, and bioethics. Beyond standard lab work, students enhance practical abilities through specialized workshops like sterile gowning training and a 4-month industry/lab placement, acquiring either research or business-oriented competencies. At its inception, this MSc program was globally unique.
Coursework explores the biological principles behind mesenchymal stromal cells, immunotherapy, and induced pluripotent stem cells - three therapeutic approaches currently transitioning to clinical use.
Teaching is delivered by Ireland's pioneering multidisciplinary team that first brought cellular therapies from research to clinical practice.
Students undertake a four-month immersive placement aligned with their professional aspirations.

Industry demand for this program's graduates continues to grow. Accordingly, MSc candidates complete a 4-month dissertation project to hone both technical and soft skills while building professional connections. Past students have secured placements with leading organizations including the Centre for Cellular Manufacturing Ireland, Galway Blood and Tissue Establishment, Charles River, Stempeutics, Avectas, Cancer Trials Ireland, Regeneron, Intas Pharmaceuticals, Aerogen, Hebei Medical University, Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Hi-Tech Health, and Valitacell.
