The MSc in Cellular Manufacturing & Therapy at the University of Galway aims to: A) deliver structured education in clinical cellular bioprocessing and B) establish a strong scientific foundation for advancing cellular therapies. The program combines scientific principles of cellular therapy (covered in 3 modules) with bioprocessing and regulatory standards (in 2 modules), while offering electives in cancer biology, business, clinical trials, and bioethics. Beyond classroom labs, students enhance practical abilities through workshops on sterile techniques and a 4-month industry or research placement, acquiring specialized skills. At its inception, this MSc was the first global program of its kind.
Courses explore the biological basis of mesenchymal stromal cells, immunotherapy, and induced pluripotent stem cells—three therapeutic approaches transitioning to clinical use.
Teaching is led by Ireland's pioneering multidisciplinary team in translating cellular therapies from research to practice.
Students undertake a 4-month immersion in a professional setting aligned with their career aspirations.
Industry demand for program graduates continues to grow. Accordingly, MSc candidates complete a dissertation project to refine technical and professional competencies while building industry connections. Past placements include Centre for Cellular Manufacturing Ireland, Galway Blood and Tissue Establishment, Charles River, and other leading biotech firms.
Alumni now hold positions as process technologists, biomanufacturing specialists, cell culture experts, quality analysts, and research associates at organizations like Takeda, Autolus, and Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies.
Students must have completed one of the following with a minimum of 2nd class honours (or equivalent):
Applicants from non-biomedical science related backgrounds will be considered on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the coordinators.
Students who have a degree without Honours in a related area and have 3+ years of practical experience in the subject area will also be considered for this programme.
