The School of Chemistry's research program engages more than sixty postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows across four primary research groups: Functional molecules and materials
This group focuses on creating novel biomaterials for advanced drug delivery methods and developing bioactive compounds with potential applications in treating cancer and influenza.
Green Chemistry
This research area concentrates on pioneering future fuels and sustainable chemical processes. Investigations span the Combustion Research Centre, Biomolecular Electronics Research Laboratory, and Green Chemistry initiatives.
Founded in 2022, the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences conducts state-of-the-art research and offers academic programs in contemporary biological and chemical sciences. The school's work supports two central themes - Sustainable World and Health and Discovery - to promote environmental and social sustainability.
Our educational offerings include both taught and research-based programs at undergraduate, postgraduate, and postdoctoral levels. Undergraduate options include Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Agriculture/Bioeconomy, while postgraduate studies cover Climate Change, Food Sustainability, Biomedical Science, Biotechnology, and Medical Technology. Our curriculum integrates sustainability principles aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, employs creative teaching approaches, and leverages the diverse scientific expertise at University of Galway.

Qualification Requirements

Candidates for the degree of PhD or MSc by research must have reached a high honours standard (minimum H2.2 [or equivalent international qualification] for an MSc) at the examination for the primary degree or presented such other evidence as will satisfy the Head of School and the College of his/her fitness.

English Language Requirements

IELTS: 6.5 overall, no less than 5.5 in any one component; Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88 overall (7 Listening, 16 Speaking, 18 Writing, 8 Reading); Pearson PTE: 61 overall, no less than 48 in any one component.
