Plants represent nature's most efficient solar-powered organisms, shaped by evolutionary processes. The fields of Botany and Plant Science explore vegetation across every scale, from entire ecosystems down to molecular components like genetics and biochemistry. Our studies encompass diverse plant forms including algae (such as seaweeds and diatoms), bryophytes, pteridophytes, conifers, and angiosperms - ranging from wild species to genetic models (like Arabidopsis) and cultivated varieties (including agricultural crops and timber species). Plant research stands as a crucial biological discipline for achieving sustainable progress, especially in emerging nations.
As part of the College of Science and Engineering, the School of Natural Sciences integrates multiple disciplines: Botany & Plant Science, Earth & Ocean Sciences, Environmental Science, Marine Science, Physics, and Zoology. We maintain a distinguished legacy in both scientific inquiry and education. With more than 130 faculty members, 1,600 undergraduates, and 130 graduate students (pursuing MSc and PhD degrees), our international community fosters a dynamic and stimulating atmosphere for learning, research, and professional growth.
Candidates for the degree of PhD or MSc by research must have reached a high honours standard (minimum H2.2 [or equivalent international qualification] for an MSc) at the examination for the primary degree or presented such other evidence as will satisfy the Head of School and the College of his/her fitness.
