At the School of Political Science and Sociology, doctoral candidates conduct their studies within specialized Research Clusters aligned with their supervisor's expertise. The School's research focus areas include: Children, Youth and Families (through the Child and Youth Research Centre), Gender, Empowerment and Global Development, Governance and Sustainable Development, and Power, Conflict and Ideologies. While proposals combining Sociological and Political Science perspectives are especially encouraged, applications outside these domains are also considered. Selecting a suitable research supervisor with relevant expertise is crucial when determining your research focus.
The MLitt program offers a Master's degree achieved solely through dissertation work. This research project, typically completed in one to two years, requires a more concise thesis than a PhD while demonstrating comprehensive subject mastery. Acceptance into the MLitt program depends on the School's research committee approval, following review of the applicant's proposal developed in consultation with an appropriate faculty member.
Admission to a research degree is at the discretion of the potential Supervisor and Head of School, and is based on a proposal from the applicant following discussion with a potential supervisor.
