Diabetes has become a worldwide health crisis, with projections indicating more than 600 million individuals could be affected by 2030, accounting for one-tenth of the global population. Consequently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared diabetes an epidemic demanding immediate preventive and management measures. Ireland's Health Service Executive has similarly prioritized diabetes in its national policies and clinical strategies. This chronic metabolic disorder can lead to severe cardiovascular complications and increased mortality if improperly managed. Effective treatment hinges on regulating critical health markers like blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol, alongside encouraging positive lifestyle choices including physical activity, balanced nutrition, and smoking cessation. However, attaining these medical benchmarks and behavioral changes proves exceptionally difficult. Given its escalating prevalence and strain on healthcare systems, there's a pressing demand for specialized diabetes training among medical professionals, especially nurses who play a vital role in Diabetes Multidisciplinary Teams.
