This program is designed to address the educational requirements of nurses employed in acute medical units (AMU, AMAU, MAU), short-stay departments, or similar environments treating patients with urgent medical needs.
Participants must complete their clinical training in an accredited healthcare facility in Ireland, typically at their current workplace. Additional placements might be necessary to fulfill the program's educational objectives. All candidates enroll in the full-time one-year Postgraduate Diploma. After successfully finishing both academic and clinical components, graduates receive a Postgraduate Diploma, or (if they maintain at least a 60% average grade) they can request to advance to the second year of the MSc program.
With its clinical emphasis, the course provides specialized skill development opportunities. Delivered through blended learning—a mix of online and in-person instruction—this flexible approach allows participants to balance full-time employment with their studies. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) has granted this program category 2 approval.
Career Prospects
This program holds particular relevance as the 2010 National Acute Medicine Programme (AMP) Report advocates for updated educational approaches, establishing acute medicine as a specialized field for physicians, nurses, and therapists. The report emphasizes that nurses must enhance their expertise to deliver thorough initial assessments and create effective treatment strategies (HSE, 2010). Future healthcare demands may include roles for clinical nurse specialists and advanced practitioners in acute medicine, making graduates of this program strong candidates for such positions.
